This 1924 Bean 14 celebrates one of motoring’s greatest endurance feats. In 1927, Australian adventurer Francis Birtles became the first person to drive from England to Australia - 22,000 kilometres across 16 countries in a Bean 14. Nearly a century later, Lang and Bev Kidby retraced this extraordinary journey in an identical car, arriving in Australia in 2024 after five months on the road.
Aged 77, Lang and Bev, one of Australia’s most experienced husband and wife adventurer teams, faced a true test of resilience. Their journey took them through many countries in Europe, Türkiye, Iran, Pakistan and India, crossing mountains and deserts, enduring everything from snowstorms to blistering 55°c heat.
Their recreation of Birtles’ historic route in a 100-year-old vehicle required mechanical ingenuity, endurance, and unwavering determination. The adventure not only showcases the remarkable durability of the Bean 14 but also honours the pioneering spirit of early overland explorers, who continue to inspire new generations of adventurers and enthusiasts.
